The practice of having a honeymoon dates back to Biblical times. In fact, it is written in Deuteronomy 24:5 that "When a man is newly wed, he need not go out on a military expedition, nor shall any public duty be imposed on him. He shall be exempt for one year for the sake of his family, to bring joy to the wife he has married.”
The honeymoon as we know it today is a trip made by the couple solely to take a short vacation. While honeymoon had a bad connotation in previous eras (it was associated with the waning of the sweetness of love that is as short as the phases of the moon), it has a good meaning in today's society. It is meant for the couple to consummate their marriage and spend a couple of days, even weeks together.
